Why do Countries Import Fakes – OECD Report

This excellent OECD report on Why Countries Import Fake Goods, and the linkage with
socio economic indicators, highlights the risks posed by the trade in illicit goods to economic
growth, good governance, and the rule of law and citizens’ trust in government. In addition,
the harmful impact of illicit trade in counterfeit and pirated goods on consumers’ health and
safety and on the environment are also examined.


The report focusses on customs seizures of counterfeit goods shipped by small parcels
which constitute most of the total number of seizures. Between 2017 and 2019, 61% of the
total number of customs seizures of counterfeit and pirated goods worldwide referred to
small packages.
